Suspended from school, bored and friendless, twelve-year-old Kate has a history of "behavioral issues"--like the meltdowns she has had ever since her mom dumped her with her strict grandmother, who runs a junk shop in a small town. Kate dreams that one day her mother will return for her. When that happens, they'll need money, so Kate sets out to make some. She decides to open a Philosophy booth next to the junk shop ("Get answers to life's big and little questions--$2 a question") and soon discovers that adults have plenty of problems of their own. But finding out that Gran has been lying to her about her mother is the last straw. Does anyone actually have their act together? Kate decides it's time to make things happen for herself, even if that means reaching out to some unexpected people and finding a way to lay down her own anger.
