Onyx dreams of flying. Up in the sky he may be closer to those he's lost, and also far away from the reality that his mother is descending into early-onset dementia. Every day he faces the challenge of keeping his homelife together while avoiding discovery by Child Preotective Services. If he had wings, Onyx could fly over his neighborhood, far above the unrest of the Civil Rights Movement and the dangers that young Black boys daily. Onyx knows he must find people who can support him--and his mother. And he knows that somewhere, whether in the sky or at home, he must find hope.
